Understanding lower limb muscle volume adaptations to amputation

چکیده
Amputation of a major limb, and the subsequent return to movement with prosthesis, requires development compensatory strategies account for loss. Such strategies, over time, lead regional muscle atrophy hypertrophy through chronic under or overuse muscles compared uninjured individuals. The aim this study was quantify lower limb parameters persons transtibial transfemoral amputations using high resolution MRI ascertain volume determine regression equations predicting femur- tibia-length, pelvic-width, height, mass. Twelve loss participated in their data were six matched control subjects. Subjects unilateral amputation showed whole-limb residual-limb, whereas minor changes intact found, providing evidence compensation strategy that is dominated by intact-limb. bilateral-transfemoral significant increases short adductor an insertion not affected amputation, hip flexors, gluteus medius, decreases longer muscles, rectus femoris, hamstrings. This presents benchmark measure discrepancies limb-loss, can be used understand limb-loss impact on volume, thus enabling optimised intervention protocols, conditioning therapies, surgical techniques, prosthetic devices promote enhance functional capability within population

This study investigated the proportion of patients who returned to work following amputation and the factors that influenced a positive or negative outcome. One hundred patients of working age who had sustained unilateral lower limb amputation at least 1 year previously and who were established prosthesis users participated in the study. A specially designed questionnaire similar to a guided in...

OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to examine the ability of patients to return to driving cars and riding motorcycles after lower limb amputation, and to explore the factors that significantly affect such ability. DESIGN A sample of 90 participants, mean age 55.2 years (standard deviation 12.5), were recruited from a tertiary hospital. Inclusion criteria were: age over 18 years; unilatera...
